Now on the market there are currently a vast amount of different printers available and I’d say the small portable printer a4 size is definitely one of the most popular.
If you’re looking for the smallest possible printer then we suggest checking out Brother’s thermal printer range.
If you’re after something smaller but not the smallest then we recommend checking out Canon’s wifi portable printer range and specifically their flagship product the PIXMA iP100.
The a4 sheet of paper is an incredibly standard size of paper that’s used up, down and right across the world for a variety of tasks. Ranging from school work, to business work and from art to mechanical drawings they are the standard go to piece of paper. As you’d imagine, because the size of paper is just so useful there are a lot of printers out these which print it as standard – the vast majority in fact. With portable printers there’s no difference, which most of them being able to print out in the a4 size.
What people tend to look for most when picking a device like this is something that is as small as possible, while just being large enough to print this most popular of paper sizes. Now obviously it has to have at least the width of the A4 piece of paper, otherwise it wouldn’t be able to fit through. But apart from that it can be as tiny as the manufacturers can make it, if you’re really interested in a tiny a4 portable printer, check out this printstik mobile printer. It’s incredibly tiny, there are pictures on the webpage if you follow the link and that’ll give you an idea of what I’m talking about.
The downsides of a small portable printer a4 model are pretty simple, it goes a little like this, and as soon as you sacrifice size you start losing features and the features you retain are reduced in their capacity to perform. A good example would be the wireless feature found in many models, the smaller the machines get the more needs to be taken away because it simply cannot fit in the space desired. Being able to connect to wireless networks requires a certain amount of hardware, not even a large amount, but considering that the area of these printers are so small some deem the wireless capability not worthy compared to the amount of room it would take up.
This kind of philosophy is applied right across the board and affects a multitude of things, with the more obscure being the ability to send wireless faxes or use Bluetooth. To the much more necessary such as reduced batteries which are smaller but obviously reduced battery life on a usually proportional scale. There are also a lot of ink cartridges which are reduced in size which of course limits the amount of paper you can print.
But to be honest I wouldn’t let this dissuade you at all from buying wireless portable printers for laptops, because at the end of the day you’re likely to only be printing a few sheets of paper out before restocking it at home by recharging it. Most small printers can print 50-100 sheets before needing to be recharged and I think that the fact that they’re small means it’s incredibly useful for fulfilling their actual role which is their portability. If you want a printer that can do everything and more it would just be incredibly large and be self defeating unless you had it in the car.
But hand held devices, stored in either small bags or pockets need to be light and it’s as simple as that. The more you add, the heavier it gets and the less people are going to want to use it. One way that a lot of small portable printer models cut down on size is by printing in black and white only. This means all they need is one black ink cartridge, and although to some people who need color this will be completely useless there are plenty of people out there who are using printers like this for purely work related business and don’t need or want color and gladly would give it up for extra space for other things or a more light weight structure.
