When it comes down to it I think Brother has made a pretty great thermal printer with its new PocketJet 6.  I’ll go over why it’s good, but most importantly who it’s good for – as well as who it’s not.  Find out more below.

Firstly I’ll quickly go over who it’s not for so you can navigate yourself to what is actually good for you.  It’s not good for you if you want high resolution print outs, it only hits 200 dpi resolution – 300 dpi with the Brother PJ 6 Plus.  You may think 200 dpi is low, and you’d be quite right but this figure only seems low when compared to inkjet/laser jet printers.  When it comes to thermal portable printers it’s actually very high.  Just think of the resolution on receipt printers at the cashier’s desk – I can’t even imagine how low those resolutions figures are.

Now to start with you may be thinking what’s the point in getting a printer which has such low resolutions, but there are bound to be some aspects which will turn you favorably towards it.  Fair enough, inkjet mobile printers do hit vastly  greater resolution – but at the prize of their weight and size.

They’re much larger than this device, the PJ 6 weighs only 1.3 pounds whereas most inkjets weigh 4-6 pounds.  Looking at things on a dimension level would be a little pointless because it can difficult to get a picture of the size when simply being quoted numbers.  Imagine the size of a standard laptop battery – that’s the size of the Pockjet 6.  Now imagine the size of a net book which is twice as thick – now you’ve got the size of an inkjet.

When it comes to mobility there are no competitors to this printer, and I don’t claim that rashly – I spend a lot of time looking over mobile thermal printers and the truth is that you’ll match this at the most, they don’t get smaller than this beauty.

The reason for this comes from its thermal printing mechanism which allows the device to be built without moving parts, and with those stationary parts being smaller.  Thermal WiFi mobile printer use thermal heats to heat thermal paper and cause a color change.  What happens is that the special thermal paper has chemicals woven into it which start as being white in color.  When the paper is rapidly heated under the thermal heads these chemicals rapidly reach their melting point and upon melting undergo a color change turning from white to black (in most cases for basic thermo-paper).  This liquid then rapidly re-solidifies as it cools down whilst retaining the color change.

This allows for the printer to be not only compact but very lightweight which makes it perfect for portable printing.  Not only this, but the Brother PocketJet 6 thermal mobile printer is far more reliable as well due to its lack of moving parts.  If you have moving parts which are themselves constantly being moved around as per an inkjet mobile printer it doesn’t take a genius to realize that there’s a much greater chance of those parts becoming defective – especially earlier models.
